Sherlockian Shorts – The Adventure Of The Noble Bachelor

First published in 1892 in The Strand Magazine, The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor is the tenth story in the first collection of short stories, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

What’s It About?

Holmes is approached by Lord St Simon to find his new bride who vanished without trace immediately after their wedding ceremony.

Is It A Mystery?

Well, it depends. If the pretty obvious solution is correct, is it really a mystery?Because it’s pretty obvious.

Is It Any Good?

There is some nice deduction as Holmes explains how he worked out almost everything before St Simon even finished explaining the problem. But it’s all pretty anti-climactic and a bit dull.

Anything Else?

Watson’s war injury seems to have moved to a different part of his body. Holmes also makes the prediction that soon the British and the Americans will be “citizens of the same world-wide country under a flag which shall be a quartering of the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes” which is an interesting point of view…
